The Fourth of THE SEVEN

Hell was absolute Hell when he arrived back this time. He would have to be even more cunning, for after the next attempt he would be more than halfway through, and his chances of succeeding were receding with his every attempt. What did this accursed maiden really detest doing? Of which chores would she be glad to be relieved? Sitting at his desk, chin in hand, he closed his goat-like eyes and pondered this conundrum.

Twenty-four earthly hours passed before he moved again. In all that time he hadn’t even twitched. Then, suddenly, he rose up in a bellow of triumph, and a gust of Machiavellian laughter. He’d got it! He had his plan.

Meanwhile, Goodie was still on leave and, every Friday morning, when her mother’s next door neighbour went to her old people’s club, she went round to polish all her brass, copper and silver. It was something she had done since childhood, before she was allotted the task of keeping all the church brasses brightly shining. By now, the joy had palled a little, and sometimes she just didn’t feel like doing it. The Devil had chosen well.

When she opened it, she found a suave young man with a buzz cut standing on the doorstep and smiling politely. “Good afternoon, young lady,” he said, in a charming voice. “I’ve come to visit my great aunt Ophelia, but if she’s not in, I’ll be happy to wait. My name is Sidney Twister”

Not wishing to turn him away, Goodie invited him in and led him into the room where she was working. He had a small suitcase with him, so he evidently intended to stay for a day or two. “What are you doing, Miss?” he asked, and, on being told, smiled as widely and sinisterly as the Cheshire Cat, and put the small suitcase on to the table.

“It just so happens, that I have with me, knowing that Auntie has such a lot of metal objects, a new product just on the market, that will clean metal in a tenth of the time it normally does. It’s very new to the market, and its effects last for several months before the polishing needs to be repeated. I wonder if I could ’demon’-strate it to you on one of Auntie’s delightful objets?”

“I should be very
